Going to the rugby, unlike football, the public schools and will, of course, big is not surprising that I've played the game I came to love the weakness in my spine called a halt. During my last year in public school we had a surprising number of nineteen year olds in the squad, is it the hope that the National Service would end before the call or because they wanted to play for a winning team, I can not say. Suffice it to say we had a winning season, and I went home feeling satisfied and, as captain for the previous two years.

| Rugby Memories From the Fifties and Sixties |
in the Royal Marines I managed to find time to play rugby on frequent occasions and played against the Royal Corps of Engineers in 1957, when the future of Major General Julian Thompson, was a backup. Later the Devonport service was to waddle Gordon (later captain of Scotland), Simon Clarke (Wasps and England), and left for a year in the Middle East with 40 Commando, so lacking Dickie Sharp (England), who arrived in the middle of Commando Training Bickleigh to be very fit training officers. On one occasion when he was playing for Devonport Services against my future club, Harlequins, I got a mention in the Daily Telegraph after clashing heads against my opposite number ragtag require several stitches after the game. It is the duty of the surgeon performed the captain who was hit in stitches, and then proposed an anesthetic in the wardroom afterwards.
After arriving in Malta, and before going to Cyprus on internal security duties, I was able to be part of the victorious Army Rugby team on the island. Most teams were the Royal Marines and we were headed giant Army Padre, Robin Rowe, who was capped for Ireland. This time Julian Thompson was our hooker. If you do not recognize his name was Colonel in charge of the third Commando Brigade during the retaking of the Falklands.
National Service ended and I was back in the UK for next season Harlequins rugby. My eventual decline came after a game or two with a massive England second row of Marques and curry, and contorting his back that I helped in my car after the game. My osteopath to put a stop to all this. However, I'm game for a quarter of an hour on the sand Aden, when at the age of 30, with a lot of nineteen years old. One really can not give up, and I received many complaints over the years that I still play in his sleep.
